2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Smith Mountain Lake, and the SML community is abuzz with a variety of celebratory activities to mark this momentous occasion.
It’s hard to imagine Smith Mountain Lake as anything other than the beloved vacation destination that it is known for today. But back in 1960, Smith Mountain Lake was nothing more than a dream project hoping to reach fruition. Spearheaded by Appalachian Power, the project took seven years to complete and included the construction of two dams, six new bridges and 22 miles of new or improved roads.
On March 7th, 1967, Smith Mountain Lake reached 795 feet above sea level—thus marking the official completion of the project. Smith Mountain Lake is recognized as the largest inland water recreation that is located entirely within Virginia and quickly became known as a treasured retreat for fishermen. As time passed, the ever-growing area attracted those with an intense love for the great outdoors.
Fast forward to today and it’s easy to see why there is so much to be celebrated. What was once over 20,000 acres of rural farm land has been transformed into over 500 miles of breathtaking shoreline that welcomes residents and guests alike with open arms.
Plans are well underway for a host of activities and events designed to honor the 50th anniversary of Smith Mountain Lake. In addition to the annual events that the area is known for, such as the SML Wine Festival, the SML Chili and Craft Festival and the Charity Home Tour, special anniversary-themed events will also be taking place. Examples include a 50th Anniversary Spring Festival, a concert performed by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and a Birthday Party Celebration on the Virginia Dare.
A full list of events can be found on the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce’s website, www.VisitSmithMountainLake.com. Events are updated frequently, so check back often.
